A Canva alternative with the AI built in

Canva is where the design gets made. It is rarely where the design gets used. Here is what changes when the canvas, the brand kit, the image editor and the slide deck are one workspace — and the cases where Canva is still the right call.

TL;DR. Oppermind is a Canva alternative for people whose designs end up somewhere else — a deck, a document, a campaign. You get a vector Design canvas, Brand Kits (colours, fonts, voice) that you attach to any chat so the deck, doc or design it produces follows them, image generation with a real editor (layers, masks, generative fill) and a slide editor with .pptx export — in one workspace, Free with no card. Canva still wins on templates, print ordering and team polish.

What people actually want from a Canva alternative

Nobody searches “Canva alternative” because Canva is bad. They search because of what happens after the design is finished. The tile gets downloaded, re-uploaded into a slide deck, resized for the document, and sent to a colleague who pastes it into a proposal at the wrong width. The design was fast. Everything around it was slow.

AI has not changed that part. HubSpot’s State of Marketing report for 2026 found that nearly three-quarters of marketers now use AI for media creation, including images and video, and 40% use AI image or design editors. So the question is no longer whether AI makes the visuals. It is where the visuals live once they exist, and whether the tool that made them knows anything about the deck they are going into.

A design tool with AI bolted on makes prettier things faster. A workspace with a design tool inside it makes the deck, the doc and the design from one brief, in one brand, with no export step. That is the difference.

Four things, one workspace

A vector Design canvas

The Design editor is a vector canvas, not a template picker. Shapes, text, images and charts sit on layers; you align, distribute, group and stack them; a single design can run to several pages. A searchable library covers logos, charts, arrows and icons, and one prompt in chat opens a finished design straight into the canvas to edit. Export as SVG for anything that has to scale, PNG for the web, PDF for print. Designs are unlimited on every plan.

Brand Kits the AI actually uses

A Brand Kit lives in Settings and holds your logos, palette, fonts and a written voice, plus guardrails: the claims, styles and topics that need review or should never appear. You attach a kit to a chat with one chip from the composer’s plus menu, and the document, deck, design or image that chat produces follows the kit. Nothing is applied silently from settings; a kit is chosen per chat, so you always know which brand a piece of work was made under. Inside the Design canvas the same kit is a switch away — the library panel toggles between the Oppermind library and your Brand Kit’s assets. The Academy tutorial on building an AI-ready brand kit walks through turning “friendly but professional” into choices the AI can apply, and attaching Skills, Brand Kits and Connectors to a chat shows the chip itself.

Image generation with a real editor attached

Generate an image and the Image editor opens on it rather than a download button: layers, masks, filters and generative fill, so “same shot, wider crop, no lamp post” is an edit rather than a re-roll. Image generation is capped by plan — Free 3 images a day, Starter 10, Pro 50, Pro Plus 100 — and the finished image drops into a slide or document because those editors share the workspace. The companion post on the AI image generator with an editor goes deeper.

Slides that come out of the same brief

Type the brief once and the slide editor builds the deck: themes, masters, transitions, per-element animations, presenter view, and a real .pptx export for the people who still live in PowerPoint. If you would rather bring Oppermind into Office than the other way round, there is a downloadable task pane for Word, Excel and PowerPoint (manual install). The AI presentation maker post covers the slide side in detail.

The workflow Canva can’t run end to end

Say it is a spring sale. In Canva the job is three tiles, a story frame and a poster, and then it leaves Canva. In Oppermind the job starts one step earlier and ends one step later:

  1. Open a chat and attach the campaign’s Brand Kit. Describe the offer, the audience and the dates once.
  2. Ask for the campaign deck first. Workspace Agent delivers it straight into the slide editor, in the kit’s colours and fonts.
  3. Ask for the hero image. Open it in the Image editor, swap the background, extend the frame with generative fill, place it on slide one.
  4. Open the Design canvas for the social tiles, pulling the logo and palette from the kit’s assets. Export PNG for the feed and SVG for the signage printer.
  5. With the deck still open, ask the chat for the one-page offer PDF written from the deck’s copy. The chat targets whichever editor you are working in.

Five steps, one workspace, one brand, no re-uploads. The Academy’s five AI workflows for marketing teams course is built around exactly this loop: plan, research, create on-brand assets, repurpose, report.

Where Oppermind fits

Oppermind fits when the design is a stage in the work rather than the work itself: the founder who needs the deck, the one-pager and three tiles by Thursday; the marketer who re-brands the same message across a doc, a deck and a campaign asset; the social-media manager who wants the brand applied by the tool instead of by memory. The deck, the model, the site, the video — one prompt away. The Design canvas, Brand Kits, Image editor and slide editor come with the rest of the workspace — documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, video, code — under one subscription.

Plans: Free with no card, Starter A$9.95/month, Pro A$29.99/month, Pro Plus A$59.99/month; Business A$59.99 per seat per month. Whatever you’re here to make, make more of it.

The honest caveat

Canva still wins three things outright, and it is worth saying so plainly.

The template library. Canva Pro advertises more than 100 million premium templates, photos, videos, graphics and music tracks. Oppermind has an element library and generation, not a marketplace of finished layouts. If your week is twenty social tiles from templates and nothing else, Canva is faster at that week.

Print. Canva Print takes a design to business cards, flyers, posters, t-shirts and banners and delivers them, with a free shipping option always available (the catalogue varies by country). Oppermind exports a print-ready PDF; the printer is your problem.

Team polish. Canva Business ships brand templates, team management and Brand Controls that can lock a team to approved colours and fonts. Oppermind has real-time co-editing, version history and sharing, but no approval workflow and no way to lock a colleague out of the palette.

Stay on Canva if you order print through it, if you need locked templates and approvals for a team of contributors, or if your process is templates in, tiles out, with nothing downstream. Move — or run both — if your designs mostly end up in decks, documents, proposals and campaigns, because that is the part Canva hands back to you and Oppermind keeps.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Canva alternative with AI built in?

Oppermind’s Free plan needs no card and includes the Design canvas, the slide and document editors and image generation, with unlimited designs. Image generation on the Free plan is 3 images a day; Starter is 10, Pro 50 and Pro Plus 100.

Can I make the AI use my brand colours, fonts and voice?

Yes. Build a Brand Kit in Settings with your logos, palette, fonts, a written voice and guardrails, then attach it to a chat from the composer’s plus menu. The document, deck, design or image that chat produces follows the kit. Kits are chosen per chat and never applied silently.

Does Oppermind have a template library like Canva’s?

Not at Canva’s scale. The Design canvas has a searchable library of shapes, icons, charts and logos, and one prompt generates a finished design into the canvas for you to edit, but there is no marketplace of premium templates, stock photos and video. If templates are the centre of your process, Canva keeps that advantage.

Can I export a design to PowerPoint, PDF or SVG?

Designs export as SVG, PNG or PDF. Decks built in the slide editor export as real .pptx files and documents as .docx, so anything you make can leave the workspace in the format the recipient expects.
